02. Applying your press-on nails

A little preparation makes all the difference. Follow these simple steps to get a secure, comfortable fit and make the most of your Rhiannon's Talons press-on nails.

What you'll need

Press-on nails, nail file or gentle buffer, cuticle pusher, alcohol wipe or nail cleanser, and nail glue or adhesive tabs.

Step 1: Prep

Don't skip prep — oils and moisture can cause lifting.

  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
  2. Gently push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher.
  3. Lightly buff the surface of your natural nails to remove shine.
  4. Clean your nails with an alcohol wipe or nail cleanser to remove oils.
  5. Size your nails before applying. If between sizes, file the press-on nail for a perfect fit.

Step 2: Application

Option A — Nail glue (Longer wear: 7–14 days)

  1. Apply a thin layer of glue to your natural nail.
  2. Apply a small amount of glue to the press-on nail.
  3. Place the nail at a 45° angle, starting at the cuticle.
  4. Press down firmly, pushing out any air bubbles.
  5. Hold firmly for 20–30 seconds.
  6. Repeat for all nails.

Option B — Adhesive tabs

Short-term wear: 1–3 days. A handy alternative when you want to change your nails more frequently.

  1. Select the correct size tab for each nail.
  2. Press the tab firmly onto your natural nail.
  3. Remove the protective film.
  4. Apply the press-on nail at a 45° angle and press firmly.
  5. Hold for 15–20 seconds.
  6. Repeat for all nails.

Good to know: Avoid water for at least 1 hour after application to help your press-on nails stay securely in place.

03. Safely removing your press-on nails

Ready for a change? Removing your press-on nails properly helps protect your natural nails and gives your reusable sets the best chance of staying in great condition. The key is to be gentle and take your time.

Never force your press-on nails off.

If you feel resistance or discomfort, stop and soak again. Pulling or prying off a nail that's still firmly attached can damage your natural nail and the press-on itself.

Warm water and a little oil can help loosen the adhesive.

Step-by-step removal

  1. Prepare a warm soak. Fill a bowl with comfortably warm water and add a little oil. Coconut, almond or olive oil are all suitable options.
  2. Soak your nails. Rest your fingertips in the water for around 10–15 minutes to help loosen the adhesive.
  3. Gently work around the edges. Using a cuticle pusher, carefully work around the edges of each press-on where the adhesive has started to release. Never dig underneath or pry against your natural nail.
  1. Soak again if needed. If a nail is still firmly attached, return it to the warm water and oil. Repeat the soaking process rather than trying to pull it free.
  2. Remove and care for your nails. Once the adhesive has loosened enough for the press-on to release easily, gently remove it. Pat your hands dry and moisturise your natural nails and cuticles.
Using adhesive tabs?

The same gentle soaking method can help loosen the tabs. Work slowly around the edges and only remove the press-on once it releases easily.

Using nail glue?

Glue can take longer to loosen and may need several soaks. Some stronger adhesives may require a suitable nail glue remover. Follow the remover's instructions and check that it's compatible with reusable press-on nails. Never force a nail that remains attached.

04. Cleaning and storing your press-on nails

A little care between wears goes a long way. Keep your reusable sets clean, protected and looking their best so they're ready whenever you fancy wearing them again.

Store safely

Once completely dry, return your nails to their original protective case. Keep them somewhere clean and dry, away from dust, direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Good to know: Once removed, avoid unnecessarily soaking your press-on nails. Keep acetone and harsh cleaning products away from painted designs, gems and 3D details, and never scrub the surface. Always allow your nails to dry completely before storing.

05. Caring for finishes and details

Some nail designs need a little extra TLC. Whether you've chosen sparkling gems, statement charms or a beautiful matte finish, these simple tips will help keep your handmade nails looking their best.

Gems and charms

Take extra care with raised details, gems and charms. Avoid catching them on clothing, hair or other surfaces, and never pull or pick at decorations. Be gentle when cleaning around them to help prevent loosening.

Caring for press-on nails when washing hair

Washing your hair

Hair can easily catch around longer nails, gems and charms. Use the pads of your fingers rather than your nails when shampooing or conditioning. For more detailed sets, consider wearing waterproof gloves to protect the decorations.

Matte finishes

Natural skin oils and everyday contact can make matte nails appear shiny over time. A gentle wipe with an alcohol wipe can often help restore their matte appearance. Avoid rubbing delicate artwork or decorations, and allow the nails to dry naturally.

Good to know: Your press-on nails are little works of art, not tools! Avoid using them to open packaging, scrape surfaces or lift objects. Taking a little extra care helps protect the designs and gives your sets the best chance of being worn again and again.

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs
How long do press-on nails last?

How long your press-ons last depends on your preparation, application method and everyday activities. Nail glue typically offers longer wear of around 7–14 days, while adhesive tabs are better suited to shorter wear of approximately 1–3 days. These are estimates rather than guarantees. Proper preparation and careful application help give your nails the best possible hold.

Can I shower with my press-ons?

Yes! Once your adhesive has had time to set, normal showering is generally fine. Avoid getting your nails wet for at least 1 hour after application. Prolonged soaking and very hot water can weaken the adhesive, so take care and dry your hands thoroughly afterwards. Be especially gentle with sets featuring gems, charms or raised decorations.

Can I reuse my set?

Absolutely! Rhiannon's Talons press-ons are designed to be reusable when cared for properly. Always remove them gently without pulling or forcing, carefully clean away any adhesive residue from the underside and allow them to dry completely. Store your nails in their protective case until you're ready to wear them again. Reusability will depend on their condition after each wear.

What if a charm comes loose?

If a charm or decoration starts to loosen, avoid pulling, picking or catching it on clothing or other surfaces. If it is at risk of detaching, stop wearing the affected nail until it can be safely assessed. You're welcome to get in touch for advice on the best next step. Taking extra care with detailed designs helps protect your handmade nail art.

Do you recommend glue or adhesive tabs?

Both are great options depending on how you want to wear your nails! Nail glue provides a stronger hold and is ideal for longer wear. Adhesive tabs are better for occasions, weekends or when you want to change your nails more frequently. Tabs are also generally easier to remove and clean away. Whichever option you choose, good nail preparation is key to getting the best results.
